Beth Healy is more often at the keys of a computer than behind the lens of a
camera. But she loves to travel and was particularly moved by the vivid
colors and warm faces of India and Northern Vietnam. Most of her photos
from these trips were taken in the countryside, where western visitors are
still rare. Her work often reflects simple moments in the daily lives of people
of other cultures. In that vein, laundry on display is an ongoing obsession of
hers, whether in the far corners of Asia or on the streets of Boston – a public
window into private life.
Beth is an investigative reporter at the Boston Globe and is working in her
spare time on short digital films. She lives in the South End with actress and
playwright Gail Phaneuf and their golden retriever Idgie.

Cow on the road to Diu 11x14
Cows are sacred in India and they are everywhere,
often milling about in the traffic. We encountered this
bold one in a small village on the road to Sasan Gir --
where moments later it was indulging in watermelon on
a merchant's cart.

Boys on Bikes 11x14
We met these handsome, smiling boys at the bottom of a
long, steep bike ride down a mountain on the road from
Mai Chau to Son La in Northern Vietnam. Many times,
boys like these would pedal right past us, uphill, on their
single-speed bikes.

Kids at the Toy Train 11x14
These three young entrepreneurs cheerfully persuaded
us to buy some guavas as we waited in the stifling heat
for the "Toy Train" to make its ascent from Neral to the
hill station of Matheran in western India. We particularly
enjoyed their visit because we were alone in the first
class section of this tiny train and feeling pretty silly as
we sat in the station because there was no apparent
benefit over 2nd class -- and no air conditioning.
Open edition $175.00
Kids in Vietnam 11x14
These children in a small village in northwest Vietnam
looked on, shy but curious, at a group of strange western
cyclists. Every afternoon, in the remotest of villages, were
similar scenes, with kids walking home together from
school.

Family in Truck 11x14
After a long, hot drive to the Sasan Gir lion reserve in
western India, my aunt and I learned the reserve was
closed -- to count the lions! We had to coax our taxi driver
to turn around and take us back to Diu - no small feat. At a
gas station, this lovely family with warm smiles lifted our
spirits.

Laundry in Diu Village 11x14
This is one of my favorite moments from a moped ride
through the fishing village of Diu, on the west coast of
India. The salt air smelled pungently of fish, and across
the alley, women hard at work washing the family clothes
smiled amid their toil. Somehow, they made hanging
clothes look like art, against the water. Far in the
background on the left is an old fort from when the
Portuguese controlled this part of the country.

Alley Laundry 11x14
We spent a day wandering the narrow, winding streets
of Diu in western India. This seaside town was
unexpectedly charming, with a busy morning market and
kind people. This clothesline, with its cheerful splashes
of color, seemed to bring this dusty alley to life.

Nasik Color 11x14
A cart filled with local supplies at the market in Nasik, a
holy Muslim city in India and a pilgrimage destination for
millions. Each morning, hundreds of people bathe in the
holy river here, women launder beautiful saris, and
merchants and farmers lay out their vegetables and
goods in the hot sun on the river's stone banks.

Workers near Sasan Gir 11x14
This was one of many trucks full of workers trundling along the hot,
dusty road from Sasan Gir to Diu in western India. The women work
hard here in the fields, and the travel in the heat is grueling, yet they
always look stunning in their brightly colored fabrics. I've never seen
so many people packed onto a single vehicle as in India, whether it's
a family of five on a moped or dozens jammed into an open-air truck.
