About the Class

Introduction to Oil Painting
Mondays, July 13-August 3 (Four weeks) 
3:00-6:00 p.m.

Participants will learn the fundamentals of this versatile medium, while exploring and developing their own unique voice as an oil painter. Everyone is welcome.

Work from still lives, or bring in your own project, such as a photograph. You will be introduced to color relationships and composition, as well as painting techniques and tools. Artists will talk about their work and discuss the work of past and contemporary painters. Creating a sustainable oil practice will also be discussed.

Supply list:

  • Oil paints any brand, in primary colors and black and white. Additional colors as desired.
  • Small to medium, pre-stretched canvases, canvas panels, or oil paper (such as Arches)
  • Brushes: One large width, one medium width, one small width
  • Rubber wedge
  • Disposable pallet paper, neutral grey preferred
  • Palette knife
  • Painting Solvent and walnut oil

About the Teacher

Sharon Stanczak is a Massachusetts-based artist and curator who earned her MFA in Visual Arts from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA and her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Maryland. She finds inspiration in the intertwining of the organic and inorganic, and she works in a variety of media, including oil, ink and pastel. Her artwork embraces and reflects the diversity and possibilities of existence, and she is one of the co-founders of the Future Yearnings Initiative, an on-going curatorial project.

She has exhibited her work broadly in Massachusetts and beyond. Recent and past exhibitions include juried group shows with Woman Made Gallery, Kingston Gallery, ViolenceTransformed, the Piano Craft Gallery, Mosesian Center for the Arts, Emerson College, Lyme Art Association, CT, Kingston Gallery, Bromfield Gallery, and the Cambridge Center for the Arts.
