About the Class
This is a 3-week class meeting from 12:30-2:30, 11/23, 12/7 and 12/14 (no class on November 30th!) and it is $40 per session, a total cost of $120. While signing up you will be prompted to select each week.
Unlock the vibrant, timeless medium of oil painting in this beginner-friendly course! Over Three weeks, you’ll explore essential techniques, tools, and foundational concepts that will allow you to create expressive, rich paintings. We’ll cover everything from understanding materials and color mixing to mastering brushwork and composition. By the end of this course, you’ll complete a simple, still-life painting and gain the confidence to continue your journey with oils.
Whether you’re entirely new to painting or transitioning from another medium, this class will set you up with solid techniques and creative inspiration.
Supply list to bring to class:
Note: We will discuss supplies in more detail during Week 1, but having these basics will help you get started.
1.Paints:
·A basic set of oil paints (artist-grade preferred, if possible). Recommended colors:
·Titanium White
·Cadmium Light
·Cadmium Yellow Dark
·Yellow Ochre
·Cadmium Orange
·Quinacridone Rose
·Maroon Pylene
·Ultramarine Blue
·Manganese Blue
·Veridian
·Chroma Black
2.Brushes:
·A selection of boar bristle brushes, including:
·Round, size 4 and/or 6
·Filbert, size 8, 10 and/or 12
·Flat, size 8, 10 and/or 12
3.Palette and Palette Knife:
·A disposable paper palette or a glass/wooden palette for mixing colors.
·Metal or plastic palette knife for mixing paint.
4.Canvas:
·Two small canvases or canvas boards (8x10 or 9x12 inches).
· Canvas Pad for practice
5.Solvent and Mediums:
·Odorless mineral spirits (Gamsol recommended) for cleaning brushes.
·Linseed/walnut oil or Liquin as a painting medium.
6.Containers and Clean-Up Supplies:
·Two small containers with lids (one for clean solvent, one for used).
·Rags or paper towels for clean-up.
·Gloves (optional) for those sensitive to solvents.
7.Miscellaneous:
·Apron or old shirt to protect clothing.
Sue Dion is a fine artist in New England whose work can be found in collections worldwide. A member of the teaching faculty at the Worcester Art Museum, Sue has been helping people paint better and with greater confidence for over twenty years.
